U.S. Army Corp of Engineers:"Every 30 minutes we're losing a football field of land to subsidence and to other factors that cause loss of wetlands"

On today's C-SPAN's Washington Journal, Lt. Gen. Carl A. Strock, P.E., USA Chief of Engineers & Commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provided the following insight into the sinking of New Orleans and the surrounding areas (2:51:31 into the archived video (RealPlayer format)):

Female caller from Austin, Texas:

...Like everyone else I have sweet memories of New Orleans and hope that it can be restored. But I'm very worried. I'm only hearing talk of the levees, the levees, the levees...I never hear talk of restoring the wetlands. Unless the wetlands are restored they're throwing our money away. The city is sinking as fast as Mexico City and the levees are going to sink with it.

Lt. Gen Stock responds:

Yes mam, that is certainly something that is of concern to many people. In fact in the supplemental's before Congress right now there's $100 million of environmental work that will be directed to the Corp of Engineers to do something to try to stablize and if possible reverse the process of loss of wetlands. It is a big problem. Every 30 minutes we're losing a football field of land to subsidence and to other factors that cause loss of wetlands...
